Our mission

As we arrive in Kenya our goals are simple and yet intentional, they include:

1. Preach the gospel- We have been invited to join the local church and preach during the Bunyore Crusades (evangelistic conferences) to which thousands of people will come from far away villages to hear the good news of the Scriptures.
2. Digging fresh water Wells- We want to ensure there is clean and safe water for communities around Kisumu.
3. Pastoral training- Local church pastors do not possess proper bible training or leadership coaching; often they are lay leaders with little to no education at all. We want to provide effective leadership training, in depth bible teaching and pastoral coaching.
4. Showing mercy to orphans- Kenya is plagued with diseases such as HIV/AIDS and we want to come around the good work already happening through the local church in Kenya and care for those who have lost their parents and families.
5. Giving workshops at local universities- We have been invited to come in and do a number of presentations on various topics such as: leadership development, faith in the 21st century, generation X and other useful subjects for kenya's next leaders.

In the beginning...

So this is the first entry the Caronport to Kenya Team 2010 will be making. We are so delighted that you have decided to follow us on this remarkable journey into the heartland of Kenya!

Before I say anything else, I do want to reflect briefly on how this whole adventure came about. In the middle of February, I was meeting with the Student Board of Representatives at Briercrest College in Caronport, SK (in my role as president)...having important discussions about student life issues. All of a sudden Glenn Runnalls (VP of Student Development) who does not attend such meetings came in to let me know about a student life matter. Before he left the room, he turned around and said "by the way, Kathy (his wife) and I are heading over to Kenya again to see old friends, it's the first time we have gone in many years". I (a passionate traveler) told him [half jokingly] that I would like to come with. He smiled and affirmed (if you know Glenn, you'll recognize that that could mean anything). However the very next day he confirmed with me that his contact would be delighted to have me come along to preach and even bring a small team (about 3-5) to support the work.
Still kind of clueless and in a daze, I went along with the idea (not completely believing that it would happen). Well, I couldn't help myself, but I made an announcement in our college chapel (attended by approx. 400 people) about this and I had asked for people to sign up in order to come to an information session...30 people did. This must have been the last week in February and before we knew it we had 25 people show up for the information session. After painting a picture of the life and cultural differences we would experience, about 20 people signed up for interviews. Within one week, we (Glenn, Kathy, and I) did all of the interviews and thus had a team of 18 people was formed. Still feeling surreal, we had a few people drop out for personal reasons and ended up with 15 solid, passionate people who we felt needed to join us on this trip-these 15 now make up the 2010 Caronport to Kenya Team!!!
